Christ United Methodist Church – a Connecting Congregation
In 1992 World Evangelism/World Methodist Council launched one of the Church’s most exciting and most productive programs in decades – the ministry of CONNECTING CONGREGATIONS through which 92 churches were started in 3 years.
The ministry of CONNECTING CONGREGATIONS, which binds new Methodist congregations in emerging countries with existing congregations around the world, was begun primarily to meet the needs of Christians in the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe. Today this has mushroomed and new congregations are thriving around the world. This has been made possible through the generous support of Methodist churches in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Korea.
Christ United has been connected with Methodist congregations in Brazil and Latvia. We are presently connected with the Methodist Church in Varna, Bulgaria. As part of this connection, CUMC has provided $40,000 for construction of the church that is being built by Turkish Christian workers. The church is located in a very poor neighborhood and many of the children do not attend school. The desire of the Church in Varna is to help the children attend school by teaching them to read and write, using Christian materials. They will also provide the children a noon time meal.
The Connecting Congregation Ministry is designed so that CUMC will stand alongside the Methodist Church in Bulgaria so that the church in Varna can develop into a vibrant, self-sustaining, evangelizing congregation. Our current financial commitment is $4320 a year for three years. This is not intended to meet all their financial needs but to assist them in establishing a presence in the area.
